Painting the Seasons

Nothing beats Mother Nature for a work of art…

lyrics by Melissa L. Tatum
music by Berdene C. Foye
lead vocals Beth Malcolm
acoustic guitars, double bass, harmonica, backing vocals Jim Malcolm
recorded at Beltane Records, Perth, Scotland
editing and mixing by Stuart Duncan of Red Barn Studios

Here’s a preview sample of the song.

Painting the Seasons was inspired by a quotation displayed at Tohono Chul Garden Center in Tucson. The words started flowing almost as soon as I finished reading the quotation. I immediately started scribbling on my iPad, and I’m afraid I remember very little about the rest of the gardens!

I owe the Malcolm family a tremendous debt of gratitude. When I wrote a song for my husband and wanted to surprise him with it on our anniversary, Beth agreed to sing it at a concert while we were on Jim and Susie Malcolm’s tour of Scotland. I love her voice and I am thrilled she agreed to be on the CD. She is accompanied by her father, Jim Malcolm, who is one of my favorite singer/songwriters, and the reason we got started hosting house concerts. Travelling the world with his guitar, harmonicas, and engaging wit, Jim sings the traditional songs of Scotland and his own masterfully crafted songs in a style which is modern and accessible, yet utterly authentic. He is highly regarded as an interpreter of the songs of Robert Burns, and has been described as “one of the finest singers in Scotland in any style.”

The lyrics:

Jack Frost etches pictures on the window pane
Clouds are casting snowflakes, no two will be the same
Winter’s pearly fingers dance across the sky
Decorate this world in a thousand shades of white

Pastel shades of Spring wash their way across the earth
Colors blend and flow in a cycle of rebirth
Gentle rays of sunshine brush across the land
Painting every acre with nature’s expert hand

Summer’s brilliant palette only needs two hues
A tube of yellow sunshine to fill the sky of blue
Mix them both together – make all the shades of green
Fill the empty canvas with a million growing things

Autumn fractures skylines, changing all the trees
Orange, red and gold coat ev’ry single leaf
Colorful mosaic a highlight of the year
Signaling that winter’s time is almost here

The artistry of nature is beyond compare
Every season crafted with exquisite care
History’s greatest artists can only imitate
The smallest beauty Mother Nature can create

Winter, spring, summer, and Fall put on a show
Each displays a beauty that sets the world aglow
