Love’s Touch

This is not your typical trad love song, but there was no question it was going to be on the album, and who else but Aoife Clancy to sing a ballad?

Here’s a preview sample of the song.

I have an unfortunate tendency to be the person who realizes on the way home from work that it’s my anniversary and I haven’t even bought my husband a card. As our fifth wedding anniversary approached, I wanted to do something to show Chris how much he means to me, and how deeply thankful I am that he is part of my life, even if it sometimes seems like I take him for granted.

When I first came up with the idea for this CD, I made a list of my “dream line up.” Some of the artists knew me personally, but others I had met only briefly at a festival or after a concert and they had no reason to remember me. I decided to issue the invitations anyway, figuring at worst I’d get a “no, I’m not available.” Aoife Clancy was one of those on the dream line up list, but whom I had met only briefly. I about dropped the phone when she called to say she would be delighted to record a song, and I am so glad I took a chance and sent her the invitation.

Aoife Clancy (pronounced “Eefa”) brings a refreshing new voice to folk music, one that ranges from traditional Irish songs to ballads and contemporary folk. Aoife comes from the small town of Carrick-on-Suir, in Co Tipperary, Ireland, where her musical career began at an early age. Her father Bobby Clancy of the legendary Clancy Brothers, placed a guitar in her hands at age ten, and by age fourteen was playing with her father in nearby pubs. She would go on to join the acclaimed group “Cherish the Ladies”, which is one of the most sought-after Irish American groups in history. Now with seven recordings under her belt in the last decade, Aoife has clearly established herself as one of the Divas of Irish and contemporary Folk Music.

She is accompanied by Tadhg Ó Meachair of the Irish band Goitse, Matt Rolland of Run Boy Run, and Andrew Gabbert of Terra Voce. I care deeply about all the songs on this album, but this one means the most to me, as I wrote the lyrics for my husband. So I was being very picky about who provided accompaniment, while at the same time chewing my fingernails about combining folks from different musical backgrounds and traditions. Tadhg plays traditional Irish music, Matt plays bluegrass, and Andrew is classically trained. The final recording not only worked, it exceeded all my hopes and expectations.

The lyrics:

The things that are important are the things we cannot hold
The loyalty of friendship and the faith in God above
Bonds shared by a family are worth their weight in gold
But the greatest thing of all is the knowledge I am loved

CHORUS:In the morning when I wake I trust the sun is going to rise
I know gravity will catch me, there’ll be air up in the sky
I may take your love for granted, but I need it nonetheless
I can’t imagine life without you, with your love I’m truly blessed

Like the warm caress of sunshine as it brushes ‘cross your face
Like the quiet joy of walking through a gentle summer rain
Love’s touch cannot be captured but its feel we can embrace
Your love provides a shelter I rely on every day

Love joins our lives together, we are two parts of a whole
Even in the darkest night, I know I’m not alone
Like oxygen and sunshine, your love nourishes my soul
My love for you is boundless, you’re my rock, my heart, my life
